Hunger kills expectant mother as drought ravages Somalia

BARAWE, Somalia-Hunger has claimed at killed an expectant mother in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia as drought continues to unleash severe water shortage, officials said on Sunday.

Deputy Lower Shabelle Governor Ali Nur Mohamed told VOA Somali Service that the pregnant mother died in Ambaressa village, some kilometers off former Al Shabaab stronghold, Barawe coastal town.

At least 30 other families are said to be at risk for similar fate if early action intervention is not taken.

Mohamed added that Shabelle River has completely dried up due to the El Nino induced drought in many parts of the country.

He called on Somalia Federal Government to dispatch aid to drought-stricken regions in southern Somalia.

The death marks the first in Somalia’s ravaging drought.
