MOGADISHU, Somalia - Working closely with the international police (Interpol), authorities in Somalia have arrested a former hospital director for Qardho Hospital in the country, and he will be facing rape charges in a court of law.

Jama Abdi Mohamud has been transferred to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, where he will face various charges, including rape and hiding from authorities for prosecution, having been convicted.

According to the Attorney General's office, investigations indicated that Jama was involved in acts of rape, as well as recording and sharing indecent images from incidents that occurred in Qardho on social media.

The Attorney General’s Office said the suspect will be transferred to a competent court as soon as possible to face justice. Cases of rape in public facilities are said to be rampant in the Horn of Africa nation, which is struggling with instability.

The Somali government expressed profound gratitude to the government of Rwanda, which worked closely with Interpol before the arrest and extradition were made. Jama had been hiding in Rwanda until he was arrested.

Reports further indicate that it is unclear whether the Federal Government of Somalia will transfer the case to Puntland’s judicial institutions, as the crime reportedly took place in the semi-autonomous region.

Another suspect linked to the case is currently in custody in Garowe, awaiting further legal proceedings. Puntland has some of the most effective judicial institutions in the country, given its stability as compared to some regional states and the central government.
