KISMAYO, Somalia - In a significant move aimed at countering Al-Shabaab, Jubbaland forces and Somali national forces have launched a joint offensive against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Juba region, targeting key areas in Harboole and Welmaro near Afmadow and Hagar districts. The operation is part of a broader strategy to liberate towns that have been under the control of the extremist group for over a decade.

According to officials from Jubaland, the operation is proceeding as planned, with troops expected to advance into new strategic locations within the next few hours. The recent capture of Bula Haji district, located 80 km southwest of Kismayo, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to secure the region. The district had been under the control of Al-Shabaab for more than ten years, and its liberation is considered crucial for upcoming operations in Badhadhe and other areas in Lower Juba.

In recognition of his efforts to thwart an Al-Shabaab assassination plot, Ahmed Abdi Digale was awarded a cash reward of $3,000 by the Jubaland government. Digale had been instrumental in preventing the sharing of critical information with security agencies, thereby impeding Al-Shabaab's plan to kill the commander of the regional security forces in Afmadow.

Last week, Jubaland's President Ahmed Madobe met with Colonel David Haskell, the Commander of joint special operations of Africom, to discuss ongoing operations and the security support provided by the United States. Colonel Haskell commended the Jubaland forces for their successful operations in liberating new areas and reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to support the fight against Al-Shabaab.

The meeting was attended by key figures from Jubaland, including Mohamed Ahmed Sabriye, the Commander of the Jubaland Intelligence and Security Agency, and General Ismail Sahardeed, the Commander of the Dervish Forces.

The United States remains a staunch ally of Somalia, providing essential support in rebuilding the National Army and combating the threat posed by Al-Shabaab. The coordinated efforts of the Jubaland forces and the national forces, backed by AFRICOM, are crucial in the ongoing struggle to secure the region and bring stability to the affected areas.
