Qatar Emir Discusses Bilateral Relations with Somali President

DOHA, Qatar - In a phone conversation, Qatar's Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir, engaged in discussions with Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mahmud, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations and exploring avenues to further strengthen ties.

The leaders exchanged views on the current state of affairs in Somalia, addressing the latest developments and challenges facing the region. They also discussed various regional and international issues of mutual interest, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and understanding in addressing these concerns.

The phone call underscores the commitment of Qatar and Somalia to fostering a strong and cooperative relationship. The leaders' engagement on matters of mutual interest and concern serves to reinforce the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations.

Qatar and Somalia share a long history of cooperation and support, and this recent conversation is a testament to their ongoing efforts to build a robust partnership. Qatar and the UAE have been competing for influence in Somalia, with both Gulf countries pouring significant resources into supporting their close allied leaders in the latest elections. Qatar lost dominance after Farmajo's defeat in the 2022 polls. Now, Abu Dhabi has the upper hand, having close links with current Somali leadership. 

The UAE has recently lost senior military officers at Al-Shabaab shooting at a military training camp in Mogadishu on Feb 10 which claimed the lives of 4 emirates and an officer from the Bahrain Defence Force.
