MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has challenged religious scholars to actively engage in the fight against violent extremism, noting that their wide networks will help spread public awareness of the vice that has affected the country for decades.

The al-Shabaab militants are fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia and control large swathes of rural central and southern regions. The group has been fighting for the last 16 years, killing several innocent civilians.

On Monday, Hassan Sheikh asked the scholars to stand with the government in the battle against Kharijites and the elimination of violent extremism by increasing public awareness. Religious scholars are highly respected in Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched the 2nd conference of Somali religious scholars and clerics under the theme “One Somalia.” The event underscores the importance of unity, calling for greater solidarity and cooperation among Somalis.

The Federal Republic of Somalia believes by the end of 2024, Al-Shabaab will have lost significant territories including central and southern regions. The mandate of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is ending by the end of this year.

Already, the ATMIS contingent has started handing over a number of Forward Operating bases to the Somali National Army (SNA). Despite the challenges, the government appealed to local business owners to resist attempts to fund the group.

Several militants have surrendered to government forces as the war enters a critical stage. The second phase of operations against Al-Shabaab kicked off in Jubaland and Southwest states where over 135 militants were killed last week.
