Silanyo passes away as Somaliland awaits election outcome

HARGEISA, Somalia - Veteran Somalia politician and former leader of the breakaway region of Somaliland Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud alias Silanyo passed away on Friday, his family announced, marking the end of an era for a man who is credited for various reforms.

Silanyo, 85, has been in and out of hospital in Hargeisa, the administrative capital of the breakaway region of Somaliland, his family said. He died after fulfilling his vision of struggle and focus, officials said, noting his achievements in social-economic transformation.

Somaliland’s foreign ministry acknowledged Silanyo's contributions to democracy and peace in the region, arguing that he shaped the state's agitation for peace and stability, despite the existing differences.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of H.E. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud "Silanyo," the 4th President of Somaliland. His leadership and dedication to peace, democracy, and development have shaped our nation's history," read a statement on X platform.

"Our heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Somaliland. His legacy will inspire generations to come," the statement further noted.

The veteran politician served as minister of planning from 1965 to 1973 and as minister of commerce from 1973 to 1978. He also became the leader of the northern region of Somalia (Somaliland) from 2010 to 2017, before handing over to Muse Bihi Abdi.

His death comes at the time Somaliland region is waiting for the election outcome following the presidential elections which were held this week. The elections saw a fierce contest between Somaliland leader Muse Bihi Abdi, Waddani party leader Abdirahman Irro, and UCID boss Faisal Warabe.

The region is fighting for independence but Somalia insists it remains part of its territory. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has accused Ethiopia of conspiring with authorities in Somaliland to push for decisions in the Federal Republic of Somalia.
