MOGADISHU, Somalia - Ali Jeyte Osman, the former firebrand Hiiraan Governor, has been appointed to serve in the presidency as a lead advisor, with Somalia entering one of the most critical stages in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants, who still dominate central and southern Somalia.

Known for his remarkable mobilization skills, Jeyte will serve as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's advisor on the mobilization of local fighters, who have been central in the fight against Al-Shabaab. Clan mobilization has effectively worked on the frontlines.

On Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed the appointment, noting Jeyte's contributions in HirShabelle where Al-Shabaab lost several strategic towns due to efforts by the local fighters who have been fighting alongside the national army.

"Ali Jeyte, a former Federal MP and Governor of Hiiraan has been named as the new head of the President’s Office for the local fighters [Ma’wisley] by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Ali played a vital role in the anti-terrorist movement that freed many areas in Hirshabelle State from their control," state media reported.

Jeyte was unceremoniously hounded out of office by HirShabelle leader Ali Gudlawe Hussein, leading to massive protests from sections of locals. Upon removal, Jeyte imposed himself as the "president" of the Hiiraan "state" which is not recognized in the constitution after all.

Analysts believe his appointment will bolster the fight against Al-Shabaab, given the level of mobilization skills of the former governor. Local fighters have been joining the battlefield with Somalia hoping that by next year the militants would have been displaced from several frontlines.

According to security experts, Jeyte brings a wealth of experience to this vital role, having previously served as a Federal Member of Parliament and as the Governor of the Hiiraan region. At HirShabelle and Galmadug, over 3,000 Al-Shabaab militants were killed during the first phase of operations.

This appointment is regarded as a strategic step towards further enhancing security and stability in the region, as Ali Jeyte’s background and dedication to combating Al-Shabaab make him a strong choice to lead the President’s Office for local fighters, experts note.
