Somalia: Farmajo sacks long-serving Attorney General

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has fired Ahmed Ali Dahir, the country’s longest-serving Attorney General on Monday, November 25, 2019, Garowe Online reports.

Dahir’s removal came following a recommendation by the chief justice, Bashe Yusuf Ahmed who is trying to accelerate judicial reforms and ensure a more transparent in the justice system, according to a statement.

In a presidential decree, Farmajo has appointed Suleiman Mohamed Mohamud as the new Attorney General of Somalia to replace Dahir who been in the position since July 2014. It is not yet known reason behind the dismissal.

The head of the state urged the appointed Attorney General to immediately take over the responsibility of Ahmed Ali Dahir and carry out his constitutional duties effectively and serve the people of Somalia fairly and justly.

Dahir has been on the front-line of the team submitted the maritime boundary dispute case against Kenya at The Hague-based International Court of Justice [ICJ], which is set to make final hearing in June next year.

Somalia has decided to sue Kenya over the oil-rich disputed sea border after diplomatic endeavors failed to bring about an understanding between the two neighboring countries.

On the other hand, the President has directed the Government and the legislative branch to complete the formation of the Judicial Service Commission in accordance with the Provisional Constitution to end the judicial reform process.
