Somalia: MPs oppose Somaliland’s Red Sea deal with Ethiopia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Lawmakers from the Awdal region have vehemently opposed Somaliland’s deal with Ethiopia, as the matter triggers sharp controversy in the Horn of Africa, subsequently, leading to outrage from regional stakeholders who have condemned Addis Ababa of 'expansionist ambitions '

On Monday, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, the minister for Internal Affairs, and Reconciliation, held a meeting with legislators from the region where the matter was discussed at length, and a common decision was arrived at.

The team insisted on defence against aggression by Ethiopia, maintaining that Somalis would defend their territorial integrity and sovereignty. For this to happen, they maintained, that unity among Somalis would be paramount, as a test to Ethiopia's aggression.

The representatives reiterated their rejection of Ethiopia's memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, signed on January 1, which grants it access to the sea. Ethiopia is pursuing a strategic position for a military base and port, which was offered by Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia.

Fiqi lauded the team for their patriotism, arguing that unity among the people of Somalia will sail them through tough moments. Somalia, he added, will resist the diplomatic ambitions of Ethiopia, which he said violates international laws.

Awadal is pushing to withdraw from Somaliland, a region in Somalia seeking independence and sovereignty, but is yet to be recognized by the international community. There are reports that Ethiopia PM Abiy Ahmed could be planning to meet Somaliland leader Muse Bihi Abdi over the deal.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud termed the MoU illegal while calling Somalis to unite against the onslaught. On his part, Abiy Ahmed says his country is only after economic emancipation, adding that 'we are not interested in grabbing anyone’s land'.
