Somalia prepares for UN Security Council non-permanent seat

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia is preparing for the United Nations Security Council non-permanent seat, Information and Communication Minister Daud Aweis said, noting the resilience of the country in the stabilization mission which is almost yielding fruits.

For three decades, Somalia has been fighting for stability, following a civil war that left thousands dead and the recent surge of violent extremist groups. The al-Shabaab and IS-Somalia militants have been causing discomfort in the country for some time.

And the decision to run for the UN Security Council non-permanent seat, Aweis said, signifies the resilience of the country in contributing positively to peace and security efforts. The country will go for the seat later this year, the minister said.

"Somalia is proud to be preparing to take up a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This opportunity reflects our growing influence and commitment to contributing meaningfully to global peace and security efforts," he said.

"Somalia has recently joined the esteemed East African Community (EAC) and this not only underscores our dedication to fostering strong partnerships with our neighbors but also signifies our collective efforts to promote peace, stability, and economic development in the region."

Since the activation of the fight against Al-Shabaab, the country has largely managed to bring law and order, with the local troops expected to take over security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from next month.

"On this momentous occasion of Africa Day, as we focus on the theme of education, we also take pride in sharing the remarkable strides Somalia has made in the face of adversity, emerging as a beacon of hope and resilience in the region and the world."

The government of Somalia has traditionally supported peace missions before the collapse of the union in 1991. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has maintained that he will push to have the country fight for its space on the global map by showcasing the resilience and commitment of the country toward global stability.
