Somalia: Puntland Bans 1xBET, Unregistered SIM Cards to Curb Gambling, Security Issues
GAROWE, Puntland - The Puntland State of Somalia on Sunday issued a decree banning the online betting site 1xBET and the use of unregistered private SIM cards, aiming to address issues linked to gambling addiction and security threats.
The decision to outlaw 1xBET stems from increasing worries about gambling's impact on young people, leading to financial distress and social problems. Despite a similar ban across Somalia last year, 1xBET continued to attract users, contributing to significant personal losses.
"Gambling is undermining our community's social structure, particularly affecting the youth, our nation's future. This ban serves the public interest by fostering a more responsible society," the Puntland presidency said in a statement announcing the ban effective immediately.
The move against unregistered SIM cards seeks to curb potential criminal activities by eliminating anonymity in communications. The administration has called for all SIM cards to be officially registered in line with regional laws.
Local enforcement agencies have been instructed to strictly implement the ban, with severe repercussions promised for those who do not comply. This initiative reflects Puntland's broader commitment to enhancing public safety and accountability.
The federal government of Somalia had previously enacted a countrywide ban on 1XBet in August 2023, illustrating a sustained national push against gambling platforms.
