MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia's Defense Minister, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has issued a sharp rebuke to Ethiopia, urging the neighboring country to prioritize its own security challenges over intervening in Somalia's affairs.

In a statement that underscores escalating tensions between the two nations, Nur highlighted Ethiopia's internal strife, noting that armed rebels are reportedly just 40 kilometers from Addis Ababa.

"Ethiopia's focus should be inward, securing its capital and citizenry, rather than outward towards Somalia," Nur declared. His comments come at a time when Ethiopia's troops in Somalia are expected to withdraw from Somalia by December 2024 after ties are strained.

Nur's remarks also addressed Ethiopia's perceived attempts to encroach on Somali territory, stating firmly, "Somalia will not permit any part of its sovereign land to be compromised." This stance reflects Somalia's increasing assertiveness in defending its territorial integrity, especially amidst Ethiopia's controversial moves, including a deal with Somaliland for access to the Red Sea, which Somalia considers a violation of its sovereignty.

The minister's statement serves not only as a warning to Ethiopia but also as a broader commentary on regional dynamics, where Ethiopia's interventions are viewed through the lens of its domestic challenges. The relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia has been fraught with complexities, from military cooperation against Al-Shabaab to recent diplomatic frictions over territorial claims and regional influence.

The statement from Nur might signal a more aggressive diplomatic posture from Somalia, aiming to assert its sovereignty and security interests amidst a volatile regional landscape.
