Somalia: What President Hassan Sheikh discussed with Burundi's Ndayishimiye

MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud continued with his diplomatic efforts as he seemed to bolster bilateral ties with foreign countries visiting Burundi, one of the troops contributing nations which has been on the frontline pushing for Somalia's stability.

Hassan Sheikh toured Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, upon invitation by Evariste Ndayishimiye, who received him at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport. After the warm reception, Hassan Sheikh held bilateral talks with Albert Shingiro, the country's minister for foreign affairs.

These meetings marked a reaffirmation of the strong ties that bind Somalia and Burundi, not only at a governmental level but also in terms of the solidarity between their people, state media reports.

According to the state media, President Mohamud praised Burundi’s efforts in peace and security, particularly highlighting the role of Burundian troops in the African Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS]. Burundi has close to 4,000 soldiers serving in ATMIS.

Similarly, President Ndayishimiye lauded President Mohamud for his tireless efforts in the realms of democracy and development within Somalia. Burundi has been on the frontline pushing for the restoration of democracy in the federal republic of Somalia.

A notable outcome of this visit was the decision to convene a future session of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation [JPCC], which promises to further deepen the ties between the two countries, state media added in a report compiled on Wednesday.

The discussions also touched upon regional stability, with both heads of state reaffirming their commitment to the goals of the East African Community and the African Union, particularly in the realm of economic growth and intra-African trade.

"This visit underscores a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous East Africa, with both nations acknowledging the importance of collaboration to achieve stability and development," read the statement. "As Somalia and Burundi continue to work together, this engagement is a testament to the enduring strength and potential of African unity."

Since taking over in 2022, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been focusing on defeating Al-Shabaab militants besides increasing Somalia's economic base through trade with other countries. Hassan Sheikh is also pushing to have Somalia installed as a member of the East Africa Community.
