Somalia writes to UNSC after talks on pre-election standoff flopped

MOGADISHU, Somalia - In the middle of the ongoing pre-election stalemate in Somalia, the federal government has written to the United Nations Security Council [UNSC], in response to a recent meeting which was held at the council, over the country's security and stability.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Representative of the United States to the United Nations and Security Council President for the month of March, had outlined some of the significant recommendations on Somalia while calling for tolerance.

In a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the federal government lauded UNSC's continued support, adding that the country has been making tremendous progress due to commitment from the UN and other partners.

The UN, Somalia said, has all along respected the country's "territorial integrity and sovereignty" even in the middle of endless wrangles, ranging from political to security-related matters, which have made it almost impossible for the country to move forward.

But without mentioning anyone, Somalia raised issues about "external actors" hell-bent to erode the country's sovereignty and independence, adding that such a move was "unacceptable" and will not be tolerated at all costs.

Further, Mogadishu termed elections as "national exercises" which should be conducted by "national institutions", adding that it's committed to ensuring the country goes to polls. It said the September 17 pre-election deal and Baidoa recommendations will be backed without conditions.

The statement comes days after the federal government claimed talks in Mogadishu had collapsed, adding that Jubaland and Puntland were responsible for the stalemate. However, the two states have termed FGS "hypocritical" and swore to push for the talks.

Responding to a statement from Mogadishu Mayor Omar Filish, Jama Deperani, Puntland spokesman, said: “I am very sorry and it is unfortunate to hear Filish saying that Puntland and Jubaland have said that the govt. should be disbanded! This information is not responsible&is a blatant lie! The discussion was the agenda!".
