Ethiopia’s PM Ahmed upbeat about Sudan's stabilisation mission

ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed maintains that the Sudanese peace quest will be realized once the two warring sides bury their differences, noting that chances of stabilization are high given the cooperation from both parties involved in the conflict.
The Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have been at loggerheads for a while, leading to the deaths of thousands of people besides displacing millions. The two military teams differed on power arrangements which saw the civilians also displaced.
On Tuesday, Abiy Ahmed, the Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2019, maintained that a stable Sudan is important to the Horn of Africa, adding that regional leaders are committed to the realization of a united Sudan.
"Since the challenges faced by the people of Sudan are also our challenges, and their peace is our peace, we are committed to working towards the relief and prosperity of the Sudanese people," he said.
Following the conflict in Sudan, the country's military government and various international organizations have relocated their headquarters from Khartoum to Port Sudan. A short readout from the prime minister's office states, "The visit is a further step in Prime Minister Abiy's efforts to stabilize Sudan."
Last week, Abiy Ahmed told lawmakers that he is committed to the realization of peace and stability within the region. "We were trying to resolve the issues between two warring parties peacefully while remaining neutral."
Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war between two rival factions of the military government since April 15, 2023: the Sudanese Armed Forces under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The country has been in flame since the ouster of Omar al-Bashir.
The conflict has resulted in an estimated 13,000–15,000 deaths and 33,000 injuries. Additionally, over 7.7 million people have been internally displaced, and more than 2.1 million have fled the country as refugees, Addis Standard reports.
