Kenya puts Al-Shabaab militants on notice in Northeastern region
NAIROBI, Kenya - Kenya has diverted attention towards pursuing Al-Shabaab militants in northeastern Kenya, which has been facing rampant challenges, particularly in recent weeks upon the commencement of Ramadan.
Al-Shabaab is attacking Northeastern in desperate efforts to marginalize, sabotage, and impoverish the region to push its evil agenda, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said, noting that the government is determined to eliminate the group.
The government has deployed modern machinery and more security forces who are trying to thwart attempts by the militants to ransack the entire region. The militants have been trying to penetrate Northeastern Kenya but the resistance by security forces has kept them at bay.
"Northeastern residents need to consider Alshabaab as their enemy and fight it to safeguard and secure the region for development to thrive. Collaboration between citizens and security agencies is the surest way to defeat Alshabaab in Northeastern and other areas," Kindiki said.
Kenya's porous border with Somalia where the Alshabaab terrorist group is domiciled makes the country vulnerable but we are determined to defeat the enemy, he added while appealing to locals on the fight against the militants.
Security agencies are burning midnight oil in Northeastern, Lamu, and other areas hunting down terrorists and other criminals to make Kenya safe.
The government's efforts in fighting terrorism in all its manifestations have been evident in the recent past.
The northeastern region borders Somalia and hundreds of Special Forces have been dispatched to help eliminate the Al-Shabaab threat. Recently, Kenya acquired sophisticated weapons including Armoured Personnel Carriers which will be used by security forces.
