GAROWE, Somalia – Puntland has criticized the Somali Federal Government's expression of support for its ongoing fight against ISIS, calling it hollow and lacking meaningful action. The remarks came from Puntland’s Minister of Information, Mohamud Aideed Dirir, in response to Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s recent statements.

During a press briefing in Bosaso on Wednesday, Minister Dirir criticized Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre for failing to deliver critical support, such as ammunition and armored vehicles, to Puntland’s fight against ISIS. He also pointed out that the Prime Minister avoided mentioning the names 'Puntland' or 'Puntland Armed Forces,' portraying him as a leader lacking authority and effectiveness.

“In Puntland's war against ISIS, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has failed to provide essential support such as ammunition and armored vehicles. He couldn't even mention the name 'Puntland' or 'Puntland Armed Forces,' making him appear as an ineffective leader without real authority,” said Minister Dirir during a press briefing.

Puntland officials have expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of tangible backing from Villa Somalia, despite the federal government’s statements of moral support. The region has been leading its military operations against ISIS fighters entrenched in the mountainous Bari region, where Puntland forces have achieved significant victories, including the capture of key militant positions.

The remarks reflect ongoing tensions between Puntland and the Somali Federal Government, highlighting a broader issue of strained relations and disagreements over resource allocation, security responsibilities, and federalism.

Observers note that Puntland’s criticism underscores the urgent need for unified efforts to combat terrorism in Somalia, where militant groups like Al-Shabaab and ISIS continue to pose significant threats. Despite the challenges, Puntland remains committed to its military campaign, urging greater recognition and tangible support from the central government.
