African Union to Launch New Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The new African Union (AU)-led mission in Somalia, set to operate from January 2025, will be known as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The Strategic Concept of Operations for the mission has been adopted, and Egypt and Djibouti have offered to contribute to the elements of the AUSSOM.
AUSSOM will replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which took over from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in 2022. The change in name reflects the evolving nature of the mission, which aims to provide support and stabilization to Somalia as it continues to face security challenges.
The adoption of the Strategic Concept of Operations for AUSSOM is a significant step in the AU's efforts to support Somalia in its path toward peace and stability. The concept outlines the mission's objectives, strategies, and operational approaches to achieving its mandate.
Egypt and Djibouti's offers to contribute to the elements of the AUSSOM demonstrate the commitment of AU member states to supporting Somalia's stabilization and development efforts.
The participation of these countries is expected to enhance the mission's capabilities and effectiveness in addressing the complex security challenges in Somalia.
The AU has been a key partner in Somalia's stabilization efforts for over a decade, and the transition from AMISOM to ATMIS, and now to AUSSOM, reflects the AU's ongoing commitment to supporting Somalia's journey towards peace, stability, and prosperity.
