BELEDWEYNE, Somalia – Al-Shabaab militants launched a heavy assault on the Qaahira Hotel in the Howlwadaag neighborhood of Beledweyne on Sunday, resulting in both fatalities and injuries.

The attack began with explosions at the hotel’s entrance, followed by the entry of three armed militants who went on to kill more than 10 people, including prominent elders.

Among the dead were respected elders Adan Raaxa Jecel, Mohamed Osman Ileynaa, and Adan Mohamed Calasow Indhabur, all from the Gaaljecel clan. The attack also claimed the lives of several soldiers and military officers, including a senior officer known by the name Galaangashe.

The victims were attending a meeting discussing plans to launch an offensive against Al-Shabaab in the western part of the Hiiraan region. Somali security forces responded swiftly, killing three militants after hours of fighting inside the hotel.

The assault is believed to have been an attempt by Al-Shabaab to disrupt the Gaaljecel clan’s efforts in combating the group in the western region of Hiiraan.

Today's complex attack underscores Al-Shabaab’s persistent threat to the country’s security, as the group has recently escalated its attacks in the Middle Shabelle region.

Each time the government initiates an operation against the militants, Al-Shabaab retaliates with violent attacks aimed at sabotaging military campaigns and undermining peace efforts.
