PM Hamza Abdi Barre: Hormuud Telecom working on better future for Somalia

MOGADISHU (GO) - Somalia's telecommunication giant Hormuud Telecom has won accolades from senior government officials and leading corporates, given its organized Corporate Social Responsibility which has tremendously transformed lives of millions of people languishing in poverty.

At the culmination of a one-day conference on promoting local production which was concluded on Monday, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre observed that the company is not only "doing business" but also working tirelessly for the "better future" of the people of Somalia.

The conference brought together business moguls, government leaders, scholars and professionals from other sectors where Somalia's domestic production landscape was deliberated, with the country aiming to catch up with other nations on matters development.

The forum provided a comprehensive understanding of key opportunities and challenges in Somalia's productive sector, and how to leverage technology for enhanced production, Hormuud Telecom noted on official X account [formerly known as Twitter].

By working closely with progressive corporates like Hormuud Telecom, the Federal Republic of Somalia has shifted focus to promoting domestic production, a strategy meant to sustain small and medium scale enterprises, which are vital in productivity.

Trade Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi said there exists a huge trade imbalance between Somalia and the rest of the world. The minister, who also spoke at the event, said Somalia is steadily rising on economic from through exports made from the country in recent months.

“Last year, Somalia imported goods valued at over 6 billion dollars, while its exports amounted to a mere 50 million dollars,” he revealed.

Mohamoud Abdikarim Gabayre , the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, said the country is in a position of creating wealth at the same time giving job opportunities through investments in local production of goods and services, essential for a growing economy.

“It is my hope that this conference will serve as a catalyst for the nation’s self-sufficiency, enabling the Somali population to become self-reliant and less dependent on foreign aid.”

The event, which was organized by Hormuud Telecom, so the PM present awards to some resilient Somali businesses and cooperatives that despite difficult circumstances, stood to produce and feed the nation.
