Puntland acquires combat helicopters for anti-ISIS operations in mountains

Garowe, Somalia, May 13 – Authorities in Somalia’s northeastern Federal State of Puntland have purchased four combat helicopters to support ongoing military operations against Islamic State (ISIS) militants in the Al-Miskaad mountain range, a senior official said.

General Mahamud Ahmed Faadhigo, spokesperson for Operation Hillaac—the Puntland's offensive against ISIS—told local media that the helicopters will be used for airstrikes and reconnaissance in areas where ground forces have faced limited access due to harsh terrain.

“This is part of a broader effort to strengthen Puntland’s military capacity in the fight against terrorism,” Faadhigo said. “These helicopters will enable troops to reach areas that vehicles cannot access, which has been one of the biggest challenges.”

The official declined to reveal the origin of the helicopters but stressed they were purchased directly by Puntland without foreign assistance. “They are high-quality aircraft bought with Puntland’s own resources,” he said, denying reports of external support from foreign governments.

Faadhigo added that the helicopters will play a key role in the upcoming fourth phase of Operation Hillaac, expected to be formally announced soon by Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni. Specialized training for local forces in helicopter operation is already underway, he noted.

The acquisition comes at a time when operations against ISIS have temporarily stalled, particularly around the Miiraale Valley, where militants have remained entrenched despite earlier military advances.

ISIS maintains a limited but resilient presence in northeastern Somalia, frequently using mountainous hideouts to evade Puntland forces.
