Somali President Outlines Multifaceted Strategy to Combat Al-Shabaab - Exclusive Interview with Al-Jazeera
DOHA, (GO) - In a recent interview 06/03/2023 with Al-Jazeera, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud discussed the government's strategy in fighting the Al-Shabaab movement, as well as addressing issues related to economics, politics, and foreign affairs.
The President confirmed that Mogadishu has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to combat the Al-Shabaab movement, which includes military, ideological, and economic measures. He emphasized that the solution to the problem is not based solely on military force, but on the implementation of the strategy's three pillars.
The first pillar is the military aspect, as it has been used in the past. The second pillar involves the ideological dimension, where the government is working to mobilize scholars to show the people that the movement's behavior is not based on Islam. The third pillar is the economic aspect, which involves drying up the financial sources of the movement.
Mahmoud stressed the importance of the economic aspect, as the financial sources of the Al-Shabaab are mostly local. They sow terror and fear in rural areas, collecting money from the people through intimidation, which they consider "donations" for jihad and other justifications.
The President expressed his readiness for dialogue with the Al-Shabaab movement, but on the condition that their conditions be agreed upon. He noted that the majority of these are Somali youth and they have no other country, stressing his desire to be part of a peaceful society.
Mahmoud also made it clear that Somalia is living in a post-conflict situation, as the transition has taken place from a failed state to a fragile state, with weak institutions. He acknowledged the lack of good management of public funds and the need for strong global financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to help improve financial management and combat corruption.
The President reiterated Somalia's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, although he is open to the acceptance of certain principles such as a two-state solution. He called on Israel to change its strategy in the Palestinian territories, stating that the current situation is unacceptable.
In conclusion, President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud's interview shed light on Somalia's ongoing efforts to fight terrorism and improve its political and economic situation. The government's multi-pronged strategy, which includes military, ideological, and economic measures, is a promising step towards achieving long-term stability in the country.
