​Somalia: Abdulkadir Gafow retains his seat in a re-contest election

MOGADISHU, Somalia- Abdulkadir Gafow, the brother of the head of National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has been elected as a member of the Lower House chamber of the Federal Parliament in Mogadishu on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

Gafow elected MP with majority 50 votes out of the 51 delegates who casted their votes among four candidates competing for the seat in a re-run election in Galmudug state.

Mohamud who was among 11 MPs whose their seats was nullified by the independent dispute commission last December over fraud and violence.

His re-election comes as the newly inaugurated Somali Federal Parliament made up of the House of the People and the Senate is expected to jointly elect a new president next week, February 8.

On Thursday, the presidential candidates began delivering televised speeches about their campaign’s agenda before the Federal Parliament of both houses in Mogadishu, and expected to conclude on February 5.

The Presidential election committee (PEC) which was appointed by the Parliament last Month said it will wrap up preparations next week ahead of the ballot vote on Wednesday.
