Somalia: Al Shabaab attacks Ethiopian base in Southern Somalia

Eel Ali, Somalia- Al Shabaab group have carried out overnight attacks against a military base for the Ethiopian troops serving with the African Union forces (AMISOM) near Beledwayne town in Hiiran region, Garowe Online reports.

Local residents told GO that Al Shabaab militants have fired mortar shells at the Ethiopian military base in Eel Ali area located 50 km west of Beledwayne town, but so far no clear information on the casualties of the attacks has been reported.

Al Shabaab group has announced that its mortar attacks has hit the military base and caused damages to the Ethiopian troops stationed there.

Ethiopian soldiers were later deployed into the area and engaged in fierce fighting with Al Shabab militants, which resulted in unspecified number of causalities, as they successfully managed to repulse Al Shabaab militants from the areas, according to local residents.

So far Somalia government and AMISOM officials didn’t comment on Eel Ali attacks on Sunday or the casualties.

Al Qaida linked Al Shabab militants group have carried out frequent attacks against security forces and African Union forces in an efforts to topple the Somali government.
