​Somalia: Al Shabaab fighters ambush KDF convoy near Afmadow town

AFMADOW, Somalia- Al Shabaab fighters have ambushed  a military convoy transporting Kenyan defense force (KDF) soldiers near Afmadow town in Lower Jubba province on Friday, Garowe Online reports. 

Local residents told GO over the phone that KDF forces were ambushed as they left their base at Qalley area and headed toward Afmadow town. 

In response to the ambush, KDF soldiers engaged in a heavy gunfire with Al shabaab militants who were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers that saw an intense clashes lasted for several hours in the day.


Sources said no Kenyan soldiers were injured or killed in the assault with the rest of the Al Shabaab militants said to have escaped from the battle scene after being overpowered.


According to pro-Al Shabaab media outlets, the militants claimed to have burnt down two battle-wagons belonging to the Kenyan forces during the Friday's attack outside Afmadow.


Since 2011, Al Shabaab has lost their foothold in major ground in Somalia, including the capital, but continued their battle to overthrow the western-backed Somali federal government based in Mogadishu.
