Somalia: At least 16 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed in Operations
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali security forces have killed 16 fighters from the al-Shabab militant group during operations in the central regions of Hiran and Middle Shabelle, Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency said.
The agency, known as NISA, said the operations targeted al-Shabab members in areas across the two regions, but did not disclose the specific locations where the fighting took place or provide details on possible casualties among government forces.
Hiran and Middle Shabelle have been major areas of military operations against al-Shabab, as Somali forces, backed by local fighters and international partners, continue efforts to weaken the group’s influence and regain control of territory.
The Somali government has vowed to continue its military campaign against al-Shabab, which has waged an insurgency against the federal government for more than a decade. The group has carried out frequent attacks targeting security forces, government officials and civilians.
