Somalia: Ceasefire prevails in Guri’el-says Mediation Committee

GURI’EL, Somalia Feb 17, 2015 (Garowe Online)-A spokesman for 32-member mediation committee on Tuesday said, they brokered ceasefire between warring sides in Galgadud region town of Guri’el, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking on Mogadishu-based radio station, elder Dahir Moallim Farah noted that AhluSunnah militias and Somali government forces agreed to ceasefire plan prior to the anticipated arrival of delegation led by Defence Minister Abdulkadir Sheikh Ali Diini.

Farah added that the paramilitary group of AhluSunnah is in control of Guri’el while government troops are being stationed at temporary positions near the town.

Diini is set to spearhead the remaining mediation efforts, sources revealed.

Former Galmudug leader Mohamed Ahmed Alim last week stepped in to defuse and de-escalate armed tensions.

Federal Government of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched a reconciliation conference that brought together traditional and community leaders in Dhusamareb in advance of his trip to Germany where he is undergoing medical check-ups.
