Somalia: Joint security operations carried out in the capital Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia- Somalia government troops along with AU peace keeping troops have carried out security operations in the capital Mogadishu, on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

The Security operation is aimed at flushing out suspected members of Al Shabaab group in Howlwadaag, Wardigley districts and Bakara market Mogadishu’s main business district.

The joint security forces have closed roads and blocked vehicles from entering Bakara market, arresting hundreds of people mostly youth during the search operations.

Somali government troops transferred suspects to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Mogadishu to investigate on possible connections to the Al Shabaab group.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed the operation, and told local media that the joint security operation is aimed at enforcing security in the capital of Mogadishu.

This comes amid reports of presence of Al Shabaab members in the main business market in Mogadisu. Previously Al Shabaab militants used to launch mortar attacks against government troops, recruit militants and extort money from traders in Bakara market.

In the recent months Al Shabaab militants group have intensified its attacks against Somali government officials, Somali troops and AMISOM troops in a bid to topple western backed Somali government.
