MOGADISHU, Somalia - The federal government of Somalia will invest in education as a priority in helping to set a strong foundation towards rectifying some of the problems bedeviling the country, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has said, while noting that through education, Somalia will rise again.

For three decades, Somalia has struggled with a dysfunctional education system following the civil war in the 90s and the rise of terrorism in the new millennium, which has left so many schools dilapidated. The central government does not have an agreement system that works for all states.

On Monday, Barre, who is responsible for running of government, said Somalia will ensure the quality of education is enhanced to help thousands of learners across the country. He asked the people to support the Ministry of Education for the sake of youths and children.

"Somali government is taking active steps to improve education standards with a variety of initiatives to ensure equitable access to quality learning. Let's support the Ministry of Education and its efforts and help develop a brighter future for our children and youth," Barre's office said.

The government has already embarked on mass recruitment of teachers who will help curb the acute shortage across the country. The move, PM Barre said, is geared towards ensuring education is accessible to all as part of the constitutional requirement.

"H.E. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has officially launched a nationwide exam to recruit 3000 new teachers. The office added that this move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s education system, ensuring that all Somali children have access to quality education, " the official added.

Somalia's education system has been facing a myriad of challenges ranging from dilapidated infrastructures to an acute shortage of teachers in various schools. The PM asked stakeholders to invest in the sector to rescue the future of many young people yearning for good education.
