MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 15, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Federal Government of Somalia’s Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke has called on Somali youth to come up with patriotism and unity amid unemployment and radicalization problems, Garowe Online reports.

On Friday, in a statement meant for Somalia’s National Youth Day celebrations, Prime Minister Sharmarke paid tribute to the 13 founders of Somali Youth League (SYL) which led armed and political campaign against colonial powers in 1943.

“[72 years ago today], on May 15, Somali Youth Club (SYC) was founded by 13 Somali youths. In 1943 the name SYL [Somali Youth League] was officially endorsed,” said Sharmarke, reminding the current youth of the difference between today and in 1940s.

Somalia Prime Minister called on youths to follow in the footsteps of SYL founders, and come up with a sense of love for the country and deep patriotism at this difficult time.

“At the present time, there is an enemy standing for the rooting out of Somali people, so it’s necessary for Somalis to reveal unity to liberate the country from the enemy disguising themselves as Somalis,” indicated Prime Minister Sharmarke.

Every year, Somalia marks National Youth Day with celebrations being held in major cities across the country.

Terror ideologies and higher unemployment rates are believed to be the problems facing Somali youth.

As a result of the ouster of the country’s long standing military regime in 1991, thousands made perilous journey to Europe in search of safer haven and better life.
