Somalia protest in support of constitutional changes

Mogadishu (GO) - Hundreds of residents thronged in the streets of Mogadishu in support of proposed constitutional changes, which have been met with resistance from a number of reputable leaders, including Puntland and former leaders.

Somalia is about to undergo monumental constitutional changes after years of operations within transitional law, which is still undergoing changes to suit the interests of the majority, including members of ruling elites.

There have been attempts to change the constitutional order, but not as enormous as the most recent proposals, which were fronted by a section of the the National Consultative Council, with exception of Puntland, which is calling for collective approach.

On Monday, hundreds of Mogadishu residents sided with administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is determined to effect the changes before his term expires in 2026. The country is determined to adopt universal suffrage model with a presidential system.

The protests in support of the changes come amid opposition from dozens of MPs who alleged that the process reflects “personal interests.” The country is determined to get rid of the premiership, which has been the mirror of successive regimes for over a decade.

The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in recent remarks vowed that the current government is to forge ahead with the constitutional reviews. So far, parliamentary debate on four chapters have been concluded, with most thorny issues set for debate.

In February, parliament continued with the debate as well despite opposition from dozens of lawmakers who voiced their discontent with the process which they allege to be serving “personal interests.”

The lawmakers signed a letter to express their opposition. However, sources tell me that the debate will continue as scheduled. The test stands in subsequent debates where issues of government structure are set to be discussed by the legislators.

Traditionally, Somalia has used the clan-based model in picking leaders which has somehow sustained peace and prosperity.

Puntland said it believes the changes are being implemented without the input of those who matter in nation building.
