Somalia: Puntland Bolsters Security in Garowe Post Al-Shabaab Executions

GAROWE, Somalia - Puntland authorities have ramped up security measures in Garowe amid reports of Al-Shabaab militants infiltrating the city, escalating fears of potential attacks in the northeastern Federal State of Somalia.

Security operations have intensified, with forces now conducting searches at night, scrutinizing both vehicles and pedestrians to find out Al-Shabaab members. The number of security checkpoints has been augmented, and personnel are working extended shifts to maintain a robust defense.

Nugaal region's Governor Abdirahman Haji Abshir, commonly known as [Qaanqaa], has called on the public to be alert. "We are asking everyone to stay watchful and report any unusual activities immediately," Qaanqaa told reporters. "Ensuring the safety of Garowe is paramount."

This heightened state of alert follows the execution of ten Al-Shabaab operatives in Galkayo last week, which has raised concerns about reprisal attacks from the militant group known for its violent campaigns in Somalia. Al-Shabaab has previously carried out bombings and targeted killings in Puntland, aiming to undermine regional stability.

Puntland officials are particularly vigilant of retaliatory actions, urging residents to exercise caution in their daily interactions. "Do not rent your house to unknown persons, and be cautious about who you allow into your vehicles," advised the governor amid ongoing operations.

As Puntland heightened the security alert, the focus was on preventing Al-Shabaab from establishing a presence in Garowe, which has so far avoided the more severe attacks seen elsewhere in Somalia. The government's proactive security measures, combined with community vigilance, are seen as key to maintaining peace in the Federal State.
