MOGADISHU, Somalia - The government of Somalia will get full support from the Republic of Turkey in the fight against Al-Shabaab, a group that is determined to bring down the UN-backed administration under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In a phone call, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to continue support for Somalia’s fight against terrorism. The Al-Shabab war is on the stretch as the Allied forces dislodge them from strategic areas.

Further, President Recep maintained his administration would help the government to settle political and regional issues with Ethiopia, which had signed a controversial agreement with Somaliland.

“During the call, President Erdogan expressed the importance Türkiye attaches to Somalia’s territorial integrity and unity,” the communications office said in a statement on X.

"President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud spoke with President Erdogan about enhancing strategic cooperation between their countries, focusing on energy and defense," the message further read.

President Erdogan added that bilateral collaboration in many areas with Somalia will enable the country to stabilize from years of anarchy and destabilization, which has hurt Somalia’s economic growth.

Turkey is a key development stakeholder in Somalia and has also been key in training and equipping of local forces. The Turkish military trains the GorGor special troops who are responsible for the fight against Al-Shabab militants.

Last week, Turkey released its Naval forces to Somalia waters, where they will guard the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Somalia is under pressure from Ethiopia to cede sections of the Red Sea.
