Turkey’s expanding role in Somalia raises serious questions 

MOGADISHU – Turkey has invested more than $1 billion in Somalia through aid, development projects and economic partnerships, while significantly expanding its role in the country’s infrastructure, security and energy sectors.

The two countries have built a close strategic relationship, with Turkey playing a major role in key Somali projects, including the management and development of Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport and the capital’s seaport.

Turkey has also strengthened cooperation with Somalia in the energy sector, deploying a drilling vessel to explore for oil off the Somali coast and signing agreements related to oil and gas exploration and development.

Despite the strong ties between Ankara and Mogadishu, Somali citizens remain unable to access Turkey’s online electronic visa (e-Visa) system and are required to apply through Turkish diplomatic missions.

Turkey’s growing involvement in Somalia has made it a key economic partner, with its companies involved in strategic sectors including aviation, ports, fisheries and potential oil exploration.

Somalia remains strategically important due to its location along major maritime routes and its natural resources. However, the country continues to face challenges related to security, infrastructure development and international mobility, including access to travel opportunities for its citizens.
