Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sworn in for second term
Ethiopia’s parliament on Monday reelected Abiy Ahmed as the country’s prime minister for the next five years.
Abiy was reelected after Ethiopia’s general election in June, with his ruling Prosperity Party securing 438 out of 547 seats in parliament.
He took the constitutional oath of office, formally assuming his mandate for the new governmental term.
Abiy's swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of President Taye Atske-Selassie and senior government officials.
His reelection comes as the Horn of Africa country is facing new fighting between the country’s armed forces and the newly formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival armed group in an attempt to overthrow the Abiy government.
Ethiopia has accused regional countries, including the neighboring Eritrea, of backing the armed groups.
The country on Thursday announced the closure of its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata.
